The Winterhawks took care of business Friday night with a 7-1 home win over the Tri-City Americans. They scored two in the first two minutes to put most hopes of a comeback to bed, and ended up with four in the 1st period. Gabe Klassen led with 2 goals and 2 assists.
Most of the goal for Friday would have been to stay prepared for Saturday against the conference-leading Silvertips. That was successful. Now they have two games in Everett, Saturday and next Friday, and a game with them in Portland to end their regular season in April. To catch Everett they’ll need to win all three, and probably win all three in regulation. Everett’s magic number to clinch the division is 5 wins, and they have 4 games with Spokane and Tri-City. It would take a big collapse, and Portland hopes to ignite this collapse in their next two head-to-head games.
Numbers 71 and 72, Hanas and Nguyen, each have 4-game point streaks. Nguyen has only 2 points in 9 games against the Tips, but they were both on January 1, his first multi-point game, and that got him going. Since that date he has 25 points in 31 games. So he brings some hope. Hanas is tied for 8th in the league in scoring.
Leading forwards: Hanas (77 points/56 games), Stefan (72/61), Kozak (66/61), Klassen (57/61), Dureau (56/42).
They got goals Friday from Hanus and Thompson, Thompson’s first career WHL goal, and assists from Smythe and Cagnoni.
Leading defensemen: Hanus (65/61), Cagnoni (33/56), McCleary (27/56).
Gauthier gives Portland a huge edge in goal; we’ll have to see how much that means. He got a rest in the 3rd period Friday in preparation for Saturday’s game.
Save percentages: Gauthier .935, Giannuzzi .892.
The Silvertips took care of their own business on Friday with a 7-2 win over Spokane. Niko Huuhtanen had a hat trick, and Michal Gut and Jackson Berezowski each had 3 points.
Everett and Portland have only played twice since the new year, both Portland wins that the Silvertips would have considered blown games. It’s a different Silvertips team this season, with offensive and defensive numbers that match Portland’s. They don’t have their goaltending figured out, and they’re missing one of the league’s best defensemen. And et, they still lead the conference.
Swetlikoff has a 15-game point streak, with 8 goals and 14 assists. The imports, Gut and Huuhtanen, each have 4-game point streaks. Huuhtanen in his last 9 games has 7 goals and 9 assists. Berezowski is solid as always, and 20-year-old depth player Campbell has a 3-game point streak.
Leading forwards: Swetlikoff (73/60), Huuhtanen (72/57), Berezowski (70/55), Gut (61/45), Hofer (58/59).
Zellweger only has 6 points in 7 games against Portland, which is a prime reason they’ve lost more than they’ve won. In his last 4 games he has 1 goal and 9 assists.
They’ll need to rely on him as Seeley, their other Team Canada defenseman, is week-to-week after taking a hit from Adam Hall. And we’ll see about Lambos, who had a boarding major and game misconduct on Friday, which usually carries a default suspension.
Leading defensemen: Zellweger (69/49), Seeley (41/48), Anderson (20/60).
This is not completely settled. MacInnes has played the last three games, with Holt, who has had injury issues, healthy enough to be the backup. The opposition might explain that. Holt played three of the four before that, and when healthy has generally gotten the games against the tougher opposition. Neither has played well enough yet that you’d say “he’s my guy” for the playoffs.
Save percentages: Holt .911, MacInnes .906, May .875.
