WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) — High gas prices might be here to stay for a while but there are small things you can do to make your vehicle more fuel efficient.
Dylan Abbott from Stickler’s Automotive in Wauwatosa says drivers can start by lightening their load. « Any excess weight in your car is more weight your engine has to spend more gas moving, » said Abbott. He suggests removing all excess items from your backseat and trunk, especially heavy items.
He says it doesn’t seem like a big thing but it could have a big impact.
Next, drivers will want to check their tires. « Your specified tire pressure should be in the door jam. You want to check your tires regularly and make sure they are properly inflated for the best gas mileage, » said Abbott.
Lastly, as we head into the warmer months, drivers might want to consider rolling down the windows and letting in some fresh air. « Having your AC on all the time uses a lot more gas, making your engine work harder, » he said. Turning your AC off for a while could save a significant amount of gas.
Monday marked a slight decline in the average price of gas but experts don’t expect that to last long due to the high demand.
TIPS TO SAVE ON GAS
Other ways to save money on gas include joining a rewards program at your local gas station, comparing prices at different stations before filling up, and carpooling when possible.
