How to increase energy efficiency as prices skyrocket – KMVT

Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — With winter slowly making its way into the rearview mirror, there are some ways you can increase your energy efficiency and save some money along the way.
Experts with Idaho Power suggest having a professional inspect your heating and cooling system filters, as having clean filters will allow your systems to work more efficiently.
As the weather slowly gets warmer, they advise closing outside doors, windows, blinds, or curtains in order to keep cool air inside.
They also say it’s important to avoid producing heat inside during the hottest time of the day, which you can avoid by cooking outdoors. According to one expert, one way to do that is with barbecue.
“It’s a great time to go outside. Not only does it keep the heat away from your kitchen, but it allows your whole family to go out there and not use electricity inside your home,” said Tom Behm, a Residential Commercial Energy Adviser with Idaho Power.
He also says ceiling fan use on warmer days is encouraged, but he advises making sure your ceiling fan turns counter-clockwise in order to maximize its efficiency during the hot summer months.
Lastly, it’s important to make sure your outdoor heat pump and AC units are free from any leaves or debris.
