How to start Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Dawn of Ragnarok expansion – For The Win

Ubisoft has just released its Dawn of Ragnarok expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The game’s third DLC offers a whopping 35 hours of new content set in the seldom explored Norse region of Svartalfheim and puts you in the boots of Odin himself. But if you’ve already purchased the expansion, you might be wondering how you get to this new journey. In this guide we break down how to start the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC.
After you download Dawn of Ragnarok, you have three ways to dive into its Svartalfheim storyline, depending on whether or not you’ve already played the base game and the progress you’ve made in it. Let’s have a look.
If you’ve already played the base game, you choose ‘Continue’ from the main menu as usual or load a previous save. You’ll immediately receive a prompt introducing you to the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC and a new quest called Restless Dreams will appear.

To complete the quest and launch the expansion, you need to go to Ravensthorpe, your settlement in England. If you’ve last played other Valhalla expansions or side content and you find yourself in Ireland, France, Vinland, the Isle of Skye, or Norway, you’ll need to use the ‘Atlas’ option on your map and fast travel back to England.

Once in Ravensthorpe, you must go to a particular tree that stands to the east of your settlement and meditate there to activate the Svartalfheim story arc. If you’ve turned on tracking of the Restless Dreams quest, the exact location of the tree will show up as a green quest marker on your map. Go to the tree and Interact with it to meditate and launch the first quest of the DLC.

Be warned that the recommended power level for the DLC is 340. If you’re still at a lower level in the main game, you’ll be able to use a temporary boost after you complete the first quest in Svartalfheim. If you’re significantly underpowered, you may also want to lower the game’s difficulty before you start. After finishing the intro quest in Svartalfheim, you’ll wake up under that tree again.
To get the boost after you’re back in Ravensthorpe and to continue playing Dawn of Ragnarok, you need to meet Valka the Seer in her hut.
If you haven’t built the Seer’s hut yet, you must level your settlement up to at least level 3 and complete a quest called A Wise Friend in which Valka arrives in Ravensthorpe and asks you to build a hut for her.
When you go to Valka after waking up under the tree, she will ask you to perform a ritual that will bring you back to Svartalfheim and offer you the level boost if you need it.

When prompted, choose ‘Learn More’ and then hold down ‘Yes’ to accept the boost and continue with the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC.

All the XP, skill points and items you earn while playing Dawn of Ragnarok will carry on with you when you return to England, while anything loaned to you by the boost will remain available only in the DLC.
If you’ve never played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at all, you can still get into the Dawn of Ragnarok expansion right away. To do so, you select ‘New Game’ from Valhalla’s main menu and then choose Dawn of Ragnarok.

This will launch a fresh game that gives you access only to the Dawn of Ragnarok campaign. Your character will start at the recommended power level of 340 and with the appropriate gear.
Keep in mind that if you choose this option you won’t be able to transfer the XP, skill points and items you acquire in Svartalfheim back to your journey in England, because your DLC experience will be completely separate from the main game.
Once you’ve launched Dawn of Ragnarok from within Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, you can leave Svartalheim and go back to England at any time. There are several ways to do this:

And that’s how you start playing Dawn of Ragnarok in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. If you’re still not sure whether you should get the DLC, read our Dawn of Ragnarok review.
